MigraCode code school for refugees and migrants in Barcelona currently has two openings for volunteers in the CodeWomen Project Team. The position of team volunteer is focused on web development (JavaScript, React, HTML/CSS, NodeJS, Express, PostgreSQL), and this knowledge is a must for this position.
About CodeWomen
The CodeWomen project was started by MigraCode in July 2020, out of the realisation that the female students in the MigraCode bootcamp often face more challenges than the male students. Usually, the women are career changers with no tech background. In addition, they have to deal with a male-dominated environment that can be challenging for women, especially those with a migrant background. This is why the project is by and for women.
CodeWomen aims to strengthen their confidence as junior web developer in three ways:
- Offering hands-on coding sessions with women developers who can coach and encourage them
- Increasing their knowledge through workshops and material on tech topics, professional skills and career information
- Growing a community that offers a safe space for asking any question or help, for advice, and for sharing experiences

The time commitment is 8-10 hrs per month for the following tasks:
- Support the Project Manager in preparing the monthly coding sessions (which are in-person)
- Proactively contribute to the CodeWomen project portfolio by proposing and creating projects, tutorials and other materials
- Attend the monthly (remote) CW Team meeting
- Attend at least one monthly CW meeting and contribute to building the CodeWomen community
- Provide help and coaching to the CodeWomen during the coding sessions
A CW Team volunteer is:
- Easy-going and patient, and loves working in an intercultural environment
- A motivated, sociable, open-minded and tolerant person
- An experienced developer (preferably both backend and frontend)
- Able to speak and write in English (Spanish is a plus!)
What can this position bring to you:
- You will have the rewarding experience of sharing your talent and knowledge with women who are eager to learn, and you will improve your own skills and add valuable teaching experience to your professional skills
- You will be able to contribute to significant life changes that our students can accomplish through the MigraCode program, and the support they receive through CodeWomen. Read(some of their stories here: https://migracode.openculturalcenter.org/stories/)
- You will be part of a warm, positive environment with people who, literally, come from all over the world, and you will acquire volunteering experience
What else do we offer:
- Travel costs
- Free food and drinks during the CodeWomen sessions
- Free language courses (classroom or online): Catalan, Spanish and Arabic
If you have the skills needed for the position of CodeWomen Team volunteer, please send your motivation letter + CV to the main contact person Henriette Hettinga: henriette@migracode.org.
