What is the cause?

Meet MigraCode (MC): the first code academy (bootcamp) for refugees and migrants in Barcelona. This program, organised by the NGO Open Cultural Center, offers a free 8-month code course to people who have a migration background and unequal access to the labour market. After the students have graduated, MigraCode also supports its graduates in finding a job in the tech sector.

The aim of the fundraiser is to raise enough money to fund a complete MigraCode course supporting 12-14 students from vulnerable communities through free tech education and other additional support that our program offers. That means that together with all the participants of the fundraiser, we want to reach the magic number of 15.000 euros to sponsor one full group of students!

Fundraiser goal: 15.000 euros to sponsor one full group of 14 students.

Minimum amount to be raised per participant: 250 euros.

How does a sports fundraiser work?

During a sports fundraiser, an individual or a group of people choose a sports challenge to raise money for a good cause, in this case MigraCode.

The idea is that instead of asking for donations, each individual will actually make a (huge) effort to create awareness about the cause while also raising money for it.

Participants can share the fundraiser with friends, colleagues and family and ask them to make a small donation!

The challenge

The MC Gran Fondo is a one-day sports fundraising event near Barcelona, in which participants can choose between 3 different routes to ride, each route adjusted to the fitness levels of participants. All routes start and finish in Ripoll (Catalan Pyrenees). During the event, nutrition will be provided our sponsor by Global {M}.

ROUTE 1 – Gaining muscle

Route 1 is for those who are fit, but may not have a lot of experience with riding in the mountains. This route takes you over the wonderful Coll de la Creueta and back to Ripoll via Ribes de Freser.

95km

1600m elevation

ROUTE 2 – Double suffer

Route 2 is for the advanced cyclist, who has experience in the mountains and long distances. This route follows route 1, but includes an extra loop via Alp, meaning an extra climb and a longer route.

130km

2500m elevation

ROUTE 3 – Flying high

Route 3 is for those who did this kind of stuff before and who cycle a lot on a weekly basis. This route includes route 1 & 2, but also includes the magnificent and highest paved climb of Catalunya: Vallter 2000.

220km

4000m elevation

Practical information

Nutrition

Our sponsor and partner Global {M} will provide nutrition during the event including drinks, energy bars and other food. There are also many places to eat along the route.

Gear

You can bring your own bike + gear, but there are many places to rent a road bike in Barcelona, like Terra Bike Tours, Cuesta or Pedal Bike Rental. We recommend a road bike in good condition.

Safety

Taking part in this event is on your own responsibility – make sure to have a good travel insurance if you join from abroad. During the event, we have a physio available and a car to pick you up if you run into any issues.

Accommodation

You can stay in Barcelona, as it’s only one hour away from the starting point in Ripoll. However, for the day of the event, we recommend you to find a hotel in or near Ripoll.

Free jersey giveaway!

With the help of our sponsor, we give 8 free cycling jerseys away that are uniquely designed by GOBIK for this event, which is sponsored by Global {M} as well. The jersey is of high quality and includes MigraCode branding!

The requirements

Have a relative good fitness level and have some experience with riding in the mountains – all routes are advanced cycling challenges and include though climbs and tricky descents.

Have the motivation to raise money through this event (as explained below) to benefit the MigraCode Barcelona program and therewith support refugees and migrants – this is more than just a ride!

Be prepared to invest training for the event: depending on your experience and the route you choose, you’ll need to be fit before the start to finish the event the best you can!

Be aware that you will need to make some financial investments in travel and accommodation costs – it’s a one day event but you can turn it into a Spain holiday! We are happy to provide additional routes for your holiday.

A last note regarding Covid19

As we all hope that the situation in June 2021 is better and we will be allowed to safely travel to the Catalan Pyrenees from wherever you are, there is obviously a chance that there’ll still be restrictions preventing you from going there or us from holding the event.

If there is a large factor preventing us from holding the event (i.e. a lockdown), we will move the event to September 2021. In case of a cancelation due to a personal situation, we encourage to create your own challenge where you live – pick a big route or a mountain near your house and start cycling on the same day of the original event! We can help you with creating a safe and nice route.

In any case, if you travel from abroad to Spain for the event, we recommend to take a travel insurance that covers any cancellations due to Covid19. Also, Booking.com often offers free cancaletion one week ahead and most airline companies also have flexible options.
